The Man Behind Andhra’s Birth

Amarajeevi Sri Potti Sreeramulu The Martyr Who Paved the Way for Andhra Pradesh

Born on March 16, 1901, Potti Sreeramulu garu was a devoted Indian freedom fighter, widely honored as “Amarajeevi” for his unwavering commitment to the Andhra cause. He gained national recognition through a 58-day hunger strike, demanding the creation of a separate state for Telugu-speaking people. His passing on December 15, 1952, sparked widespread public protests and grief, prompting Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to announce the formation of Andhra State just four days later, on December 19, 1952. Sreeramulu’s selfless sacrifice played a pivotal role in the birth of a Telugu-speaking state, marking a historic milestone in India’s linguistic and cultural identity.

Meet Our Trustee

On July 18, 2025, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, in association with the Potti Sreeramulu Memorial Trust under Chairman Doondi Rakesh’s leadership, grandly organized the 125th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Amarajeevi Potti Sreeramulu at Tuni constituency as per Honorable Chief Minister Sri Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s directions. The event was graced by chief guest Tuni Constituency MLA and Government Whip Smt. Divya Yanamala, who along with Doondi Rakesh, Arya Vysya community members, and TDP leaders offered floral tributes at Potti Sreeramulu’s statue, while an audio-visual presentation on Amarajeevi’s life story captivated the audience. Doondi Rakesh announced that the government has proudly decided to conduct year-long birth anniversary celebrations from March 16, 2025, to March 16, 2026, and to honor the great leader who sacrificed his life through a 58-day hunger strike for the Telugu-speaking state, a magnificent 58-feet statue of Amarajeevi is being erected in Amaravati on 6.8 acres of government-allocated land.
